The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Endurance Cup 2023 continues to set the benchmark for endurance worldwide. In this ultimate test of man and horse against time and the elements, 200 riders will navigate 120 km of AlUla’s unique and rugged desert terrain – quite different to other similar-tier global competitions
Endurance is a long-distance competition against the clock testing the speed and endurance of a horse and challenging the rider over their effective use of pace, thorough knowledge of their horse’s capabilities and ability to cross all kinds of terrain. “Natural but technical,” the organisers have created a course that will provide a challenging but level playing field
ENDURANCE TRACKS
For 2023, AlUla will be hosting another edition of this 2-star sanctioned ride (CEI 2*) The course will comprise of 120 km of natural tracks within the magnificent landscape of AlUla, and will be divided into 4 loops that vary in distance with the first being the longest with 38.2km in length and the last being the shortest with 22.4km
EQUALITY IN SPORTS
As with all Equestrian Sports, Endurance riding is one of the few inclusive sports where men and women compete alongside each other with equal opportunity to achieve success and recognition. 19% of the almost 200 riders in the 2022 edition were female. AlUla is proud to support equality in sports
HORSE WELFARE
Veterinary inspections at the end of each endurance course loop, called the Vet Gate make sure to uphold the highest standards of horse welfare. Although the rides are timed, the emphasis is on both rider and horse to finish all 4 loops in good condition rather than coming home fastest
EQUINE TRAINING PROGRAMME
AlUla has a long history of horse-riding and equestrianism, which extends back thousands of years. Drawing on the region’s heritage, training programmes and new job opportunities have been created for local horse riders, stewards, coaches, grooms, and other roles
